10 Fun and Easy Summer Activities to Keep Your Toddlers Entertained

Summer's here, and if your house is anything like mine, it’s a mixture of laughter, chaos, and the never-ending quest to keep the kids entertained.

Picture this: two energetic boys bouncing off the walls, constantly on the lookout for their next big adventure. Sound familiar? Well, over the years, I've become somewhat of a summer activity guru, and I’m here to share my treasure trove of fun, sanity-saving ideas.

So, grab your sun hat, a cold drink, and let's dive into the ultimate guide to keeping your kids busy, happy, and maybe even giving you a moment to catch your breath!

Here are some fun ideas to try at home:

1. Indoor Obstacle Course

  • Materials: Pillows, chairs, blankets, and toys.

  • Setup: Use household items to create an obstacle course. Let your toddler crawl under blankets, jump over pillows, and weave around chairs.

  • Benefits:It boosts their gross motor skills and problem-solving abilities, and they can do it mostly on their own with just a little help from you now and then. As long as you don't mind a bit of mess while you sit back and enjoy the show, it's totally worth it.

2. Treasure Hunt

  • Materials: Small toys or objects, paper, and crayons.

  • Setup: Hide small toys around the house and create simple clues or a map for them to follow. It takes a bit of prep on your part, but it’s absolutely adorable to watch them run around the house on a "treasure" hunt.

  • Benefits: Enhances cognitive skills and encourages exploration.

3. Water Play

  • Materials: Plastic containers, cups, spoons, and water (or a small blow-up pool).

  • Setup: Fill a shallow container or blow-up pool with water and provide various tools for pouring and scooping. You can relax in the shade with a cold drink while they splash around.

  • Benefits: Develops fine motor skills and offers sensory exploration.

4. Simon Says

  • Materials: None.

  • Setup: Give simple commands starting with "Simon says" for actions like jumping, clapping, or spinning. If you don’t say “Simon says,” they should stay still. Who knows, it might even inspire them to listen to you more. A girl can dream, right?

  • Benefits: Improves listening skills and ability to follow directions.

5. Bake Cupcakes

  • Materials: Easy cupcake mix, icing, and sprinkles.

  • Setup: Have your kids help you with mixing and decorating the cupcakes. They can sit on the counter or stand on a chair. Once you are done, it's a tasty treat that everyone can enjoy.

  • Benefits: Sparks an interest in cooking and teaches basic kitchen skills.

6. Bubble Fun

  • Materials: Bubble solution, bubble wands and/or bubble machine.

  • Setup: Blow bubbles and watch your toddler chase and pop them! We got this bubble machine during the COVID era, and it’s still a huge hit with the kids. They absolutely love it!

  • Benefits: Promotes physical activity and hand-eye coordination.

8. Craft Time

9. Play Games

  • Materials: Your favorite board games, playing cards, memory games, alphabet or numbers bingo.

  • Setup: Choose age-appropriate games and play together. Memory games and bingo can be both fun and educational.

  • Benefits: Encourages strategic thinking, improves memory, and teaches numbers and letters.

10. Hide and Seek

  • Materials: None.

  • Setup: One person counts while everyone else hides. When the counting's done, the seeker starts the hunt. My oldest absolutely loves this game—we play it at least once a week. We both try to find new, creative hiding spots each time. It gets really fun once you get into it!

  • Benefits: Encourages physical activity, enhances problem-solving skills, and it's a classic game that never gets old.

I hope you give these activities a shot and lean into the chaos of summer. It's easy to get swept up in the craziness of parenting and forget to savor these moments with our little ones. So, make every second count and tackle each moment with patience and a good dose of humor.

But before you run off and give these activities a try, here are some small tips for playing with your toddlers:

  • Keep Activities Short: Toddlers have short attention spans, so keep each game around 10-15 minutes.

  • Be Flexible: Follow your toddler’s lead and switch activities if they lose interest.

  • Encourage Participation: Let your toddler help with setup and cleanup to build independence and responsibility.

With these activities, you and your toddlers can make the most of your summer days, creating fun and enriching memories together!

Keep calm and Parent on!
