Encouraging a Love for Reading in Preschoolers and 1st Graders

The school year is here, and while some of us are still recovering from the chaos of summer break, it's time to get our little ones back into the swing of things. And let’s be honest—getting kids to read can sometimes feel a bit daunting. But don’t worry! Whether your child is a preschooler just learning the ropes or a seasoned 1st grader, I’ve got some sneaky and fun tips to get them hooked on reading faster than you can say “bedtime story.” Here’s how to turn your little bundle of energy into a bookworm without them even realizing it!

1. Create a Cozy Reading Nook

First things first, every reader needs a hideout! Find a quiet corner in your house and turn it into the ultimate reading fort. Think lots of pillows, cozy blankets, maybe even a string of fairy lights if you're feeling fancy. This isn’t just a place to read—it's their secret reading headquarters. The goal is to make it so inviting that your kid wants to spend time there even when they aren’t reading. And hey, you might catch them “reading” more pictures than words at first, but that's okay! The key is to make reading feel like a special, relaxing treat.

2. Turn Library Visits into an Adventure

Now, I know what you're thinking—taking a toddler to the library might sound like a recipe for shushing and panic. But hear me out! Libraries can be a great adventure for the kids. Get them their own library card, and let them pick out any book that catches their eye. I started this with my boys as soon as they could walk, and now our bi-weekly library trips are a highlight. Plus, I sneak in a themed book based on what’s going on in our lives—potty training, anyone? They get a kick out of it, and it helps them see reading as relevant and fun.

3. Make Reading Part of Your Daily Routine

Let’s face it, by the time evening rolls around, most of us are ready to crash harder than a sugar-fueled toddler. But squeezing in a reading session right before bed can be a game-changer. We’ve turned bedtime reading into a sacred ritual at our house—it’s the calm after the storm of dinner and bath time. My kids actually look forward to it, and it’s the one part of the day where I know they’ll sit still (even if it’s just for five minutes).

Pro tip: Keep a stash of their favorite books close by, so there’s always a quick and easy choice when you're both too tired to think.

4. Pick Books with Themes That Match Real Life

Here’s where the fun part comes in—making reading relevant to what’s happening in your child’s life. If you’re headed to the zoo, grab a book about animals. If your little one is learning to brush their teeth, find a story about a character doing the same. My oldest thought reading a book about a boy going to the potty was hilarious (and let’s be real, so did I). This trick not only makes reading more engaging but also helps them connect what they read with what they experience. It’s like sneakily teaching them life lessons while they think they’re just having fun.

5. Have Fun Talking About the Stories

After reading, don’t just close the book and move on—chat about it! Ask your kid what their favorite part was or which character they liked best. Maybe your kids might love love trying to guess what will happen next in a story, and maybe their predictions might be way more entertaining than the book itself! These little discussions are a great way to boost their comprehension and get them thinking more deeply about the stories they read. Plus, it's a fun way to bond and see the world through their eyes.

Getting your preschooler or 1st grader excited about reading doesn’t have to be a battle. With a cozy space, a bit of routine, and some creative book choices, you can turn reading into a fun and beloved part of their daily life. Give these tips a try, and who knows? You might find yourself loving these reading moments just as much as they do.
