Ten Fun Places to Visit with Kids in the Netherlands: Top Picks for Families!

Hey there, fellow parents! If you're planning a trip to the Netherlands or are an expat living in this beautiful country, you're probably on the lookout for fun places to take your energetic little ones. As a parent of two lively boys, I know how important it is to find the perfect spots where kids can run, play, and learn. So, whether the Dutch weather decides to play nice or throw a rainy curveball, here are some fantastic suggestions to keep your kids entertained and happy.

Sunny Day Adventures: Let’s Soak Up Some Sun!

1. Linnaeushof: Europe’s Largest Playground

Prepare to be amazed! Linnaeushof isn't just any playground; it's Europe's largest outdoor play paradise. This place is so vast that it might feel a bit overwhelming at first, but trust me, your kids will love every inch of it. With rides for all ages, giant slides, swings, a small indoor playground, and even a water park, there's no end to the fun. And in true Dutch fashion, there's a cool train ride that kids absolutely adore. My boys had an absolute blast here, and I can't recommend it enough.

Zoos are always a hit with kids, and the Netherlands boasts some of the best. Artis Amsterdam Zoo and Blijdorp Rotterdam Zoo are both top-notch destinations. They offer a fantastic opportunity for kids to learn about the animal kingdom while also burning off some energy in the various playgrounds. Parents, you’ll love the chance to grab a coffee and relax while the little ones explore. These zoos are quite expansive, so wear comfortable walking shoes and prepare for a day filled with discovery and fun.

3. Jeugdland: Nature’s Playground If your kids love running wild in nature, then Jeugdland is the place to be. Scattered around the Netherlands, these outdoor playgrounds are perfect for kids to climb, dig, and explore in a safe environment. Think of it as nature’s own adventure park. It's also an ideal spot for a family picnic. Just pack some snacks, let the kids get dirty, and enjoy the serene surroundings. The Dutch have truly mastered the art of creating safe and fun play areas for children.

4. Keukenhof: A Floral Wonderland Keukenhof is an absolute must-visit, especially if you're in the Netherlands during tulip season (late March to early May). This botanical garden is a feast for the eyes, with millions of vibrant flowers, including the famous Dutch tulips. It’s not just for flower enthusiasts, though. Kids will love the wide-open spaces, the large indoor playground, and the petting zoo. While it can get a bit crowded, the beauty of Keukenhof make it a wonderful outing for the whole family.

5. Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum): All Aboard!

For train enthusiasts like my son, the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht is a must-visit. This interactive museum is dedicated to the history of railways and features an impressive collection of trains. My son Christian was thrilled to see the diverse range of locomotives, both old and new. Kids can climb aboard old locomotives, enjoy themed exhibits, and even take a mini-train ride. It's a perfect indoor destination that combines learning with fun, making it a hit with kids and parents alike.

6. Indoor Playgrounds: Ball Pits and Bouncing Castles

The Netherlands is home to numerous indoor playgrounds, perfect for letting kids burn off some energy on a rainy day. Places like Monkey Town are my absolute favorite. They are filled with ball pits, climbing frames, and bouncing castles. These indoor play centers are designed to let kids run, jump, and play to their hearts' content, while parents can relax and enjoy a coffee nearby. It’s a great way to get the kids out of the house and active, especially when you’re too tired to keep up with their boundless energy.
